Zambia Thrash Algeria In Lusaka
Yesterday was a day for stocktaking for the Super Eagles, who are billed to depart for Cameroun by 10.00 a.m today, aboard a chartered Arik Airline flight.
Following the 4-0 defeat of Cameroun and the 3-1 victory Zambia had over Algeria, the Eagles’ technical crew and some senior players met to analyse the situation in Group B and the various possibilities that could come up after tomorrow’s reverse fixture in Yaounde.
Before then, officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), their sponsors and other stakeholders met to re-evaluate the Nigerian status in the qualifying series and plan the strategy for a successful outing in Yaounde.
The Guardian learnt that the NFF meeting, which stretched to the early hours of yesterday, also appraised the budget for the game in Cameroun and the best possible way to ensure the Eagles are not intimidated by the Camerounians, who have vowed to do everything possible to reboot their floundering campaign in the qualifying series.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles’ captain, John Obi Mikel, has assured Nigerians that the team will come back from Cameroun with their unbeaten run intact.
Speaking during a parley involving Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, NFF officials and representatives of AITEO Group, which is the major national teams’ sponsor, Mikel said the players were grateful to Nigerians for the massive support they got when they met Cameroun on Friday.
He added, “We are determined to go to the World Cup and no team can stop us now. We appreciate the support of the Akwa Ibom State government, our sponsors and all the supporters and we promise that we will not disappoint you.”
The Super Eagles had a light work out in their Le Meridien Hotel camp, yesterday, and are expected to feel the Yaounde Stadium pitch today.Meanwhile, a brace from Brian Mwila, and a goal through Enock Mwepu, ensured Zambia bagged a 3-1 win over Algeria in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Group B match at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka yesterday.
In the wake of the victory, Zambia now occupy the second spot in the group with four points from one win, one draw and a single loss, and will hope to complete the job in Constantine, on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Yacine Brahimi netted the only goal for the visitors, as they remain rooted at the bottom of the group with one point from two losses and a draw so far.
